Vale Shane Warne

Shane Warne makes a strong case to be the second greatest Australian test player of all time. But he was so much more than that. Here’s a poem I wrote as a tribute to one of Australia’s – and Melbourne’s – great legends.

A poem about #ShaneWarne which reads as follows:

Warnie

Perhaps it was always destined so
That you would go too soon
God’s finger raised -
Caught on the boundary one last time.
You lived life to the full and
I guess you were never meant
To reach that century. They say
True genius is always flawed.

But you are in our Melbourne sepia-ed hearts
You are our boys-own Aussie hero
The flawed master with a ball (or two)
The superstar, the bad boy, the larrikin.
We still see you now in sunlight
Blonde locks flying
In whites, one knee grounded,
In appeal. One final time.

You transcended mere statistics.
You were never 708, but passion
Energy and personality – more the Joker
To Bradman’s smoother Batman,
But a superhero nonetheless.
We know you’ll have a mystery ball today
to fool St Peter – he’ll look ashen –
as you turn it sideways through the Pearly gate.
